Across Horsham District, residents are already making a big difference by recycling their food waste.
Since the programme launched in March, an impressive 1,000 tonnes of food waste has been collected. That’s around 20 tonnes a day, or approximately 14kg a household. To bring this to life, it’s the same weight as 666 cars, 80 double‑decker buses, or 167 African elephants.
We want to thank every household playing their part in this success.
With an estimated 4.4 million tonnes of edible food waste being thrown away by UK households each year, it’s really important that every small bit of food waste is recycled. No amount is too small and food waste bins will be emptied no matter how little they contain.
Thanks to residents’ efforts, food waste is being put to good use. It is sent to an Anaerobic Digestion Plant, operated on behalf of West Sussex County Council, where it is transformed into renewable energy and a nutrient‑rich fertiliser, which returns goodness to the soil locally.
By continuing to recycle food waste each week, we are reducing waste, generating clean energy, and supporting local agriculture.
