Edition: March 2025
Whilst it is primarily the responsibility of homeowners to maintain their own properties, we can help vulnerable residents with some repairs and improvements.

In this edition we are spotlighting our Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG), which help fund adaptations for people to remain in their own homes.
What sort of works do the grants cover?
Most of the grants that we administer are for level access showers or stairlifts. We can also adapt kitchens for wheelchair users and make other adjustments as recommended by Occupational Therapists to make a disabled person’s life safer and improve independence.
Recent examples of works completed include:

A bathroom adaptation (pictured here) for a resident with Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia. On inspecting the finished room, our Environmental Health Officer noted some issues with the front door lock. We were also able to help arrange a contractor to resolve the security issue.
We assisted a resident in her thirties who has reduced mobility. She required support to convert a downstairs cloakroom into an accessible shower room.
She also needed a step and rail and a stairlift to assist her at home. The job was completed by one contractor in five months. The client mentioned that the adaptation has changed her life for the better.
Other adaptations have included an adjustable height cooker (pictured right), which enabled easier and safer access for wheelchair use.
Who is eligible?
We can provide a DFG for disabled people who are receiving means-tested benefits or who have a low income. They must first be recommended by West Sussex County Council's Occupational Therapists. We have an online eligibility calculator at: https://horshamdfg. friendlyforms.co.uk
What is the process?
An Occupational Therapist will assess needs and send their recommendations to us. We will work with the client to carry out a means test, and complete any application forms. Quotes are obtained and we will agree proposed works and expected timescales before any work commences.
How are DFGs funded?
The Government provides funding for adaptations and guidelines for County Council Occupational Therapists and District Council Grants Officers to follow to make sure that the funding is used in the best way for the residents. The average grant in 2023-24 was around £8,000.
DFG in numbers
Works completed in 2023-24:
- 74 level access showers and bathroom adaptations
- 26 stairlifts and through floor lifts
37 access adaptations (including ramps and wider doors)
- 44 improvements to make homes safe, suitable and warm
- 4 kitchen adaptations
- 9 technology solutions
- 4 extensions
Some clients have required more than one adaptation.
What if I don’t qualify for a grant?
If you do not qualify for a DFG, your Occupational Therapist can give you advice, and explain how to find reputable contractors who can carry out the works for you under your own private funding.
