Edition: March 2025
Did you know that over 40% of the rubbish in an average Horsham District bin is made up of food waste?

Food Waste Action Week this year was 17 to 23 March. Love Food Hate Waste, who run the annual campaign, have calculated that food waste costs UK households £4.9billion each year.
Household food waste collections will launch in Horsham District in March 2026. Residents can expect a phased roll-out of weekly food waste collections, with household refuse and recycling collections continuing as usual every two weeks.
In preparation for that, now is the perfect time to think about our food waste habits and where we can make changes to help us reduce waste and save money.
Where to start
Consider where your food waste comes from. Do you end up discarding food which has spoiled in storage, create waste as you prepare dishes, or do you have loads of leftovers at the end of each meal?
Be a menu planner
By planning your menus and purposefully buying for those meals, you are less likely to have unwanted odds and ends in your fridge. To save time and money, consider batch cooking.
Check your quick wins
Sharpen your knife skills so you don’t waste any ingredients in food preparation, dish up smaller portions and give yourself a night off from cooking by making the most of your leftovers.
Review your storage methods
Make perishable items last as long as possible by storing carefully.
Get creative with your ingredients
Utilise offcuts in stocks, soups, stews and sauces and rescue stale bread by freezing as breadcrumbs.
Don’t waste your waste
You can reduce your environmental impact by composting eggshells and peelings at home. Knowing where you are making waste will help you reduce it, benefit the environment, and save you money.
