Edition: March 2026
Last year, we proudly hosted our first Winter Warm Up events – free activity taster days designed for residents aged 50 and over.
Held at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath and Chanctonbury Leisure Centre in Storrington, the events welcomed over 300 attendees and proved to be a resounding success.
A warm welcome for all
Our aim was to reach residents not currently making use of the fantastic facilities and classes available locally, and to offer a gentle, friendly introduction to activities that could benefit both their physical health and overall wellbeing.
The atmosphere was relaxed and inclusive, with no pressure to participate – just an open invitation to explore, have a go and enjoy.
Activities to inspire and energise
Attendees were invited to try a wide range of taster sessions, from strength and balance classes to dance, arts and crafts, music, climbing, cycling, and team sports including tennis, pickleball, badminton, bowls, boccia, kurling, walking football, cricket, and netball. Health services were also on hand, offering Wellbeing MOTs, NHS Health Checks, and Flu and COVID vaccinations.
Connecting with support services
The events also brought together a network of local support providers, creating a wide-reaching marketplace of services. Visitors could speak directly with organisations such as Age UK West Sussex Brighton & Hove, Carers Support, Hourglass (supporting safer ageing), Horsham District Community Transport, Royal Voluntary Service, Southern Water, and more.
Our own services, including Community Link, Horsham District Wellbeing and Neighbourhood Wardens, were also on hand to offer guidance and support.
Refreshments were provided by UK Harvest.
Why events like this matter
As we age, staying active and connected becomes increasingly important not just for physical health, but for maintaining independence, confidence, and a sense of community. Events like the Winter Warm Up play a vital role in helping residents discover new interests, access support early, and build habits that can prevent future challenges.
It was a great opportunity to see what’s available.
