Edition: November 2024
As a council, we are always looking for ways to attract new talent, as well as offering training opportunities to our existing workforce.
In this edition we are sharing news about a few of our recent schemes.
Our environmental apprentices make a strong start
We are proud of our apprenticeship programme at the Council. Did you know that we have successfully taken on 20 apprentices over the last few years? We currently have two degree apprentices.
Our most recent recruits joined earlier this year as Environmental Apprentices and are working across various areas at the Council dedicated to improving the environment while studying towards a BSc in Environmental Science.
Local Government Graduate Programme brings new talent
This is a two-year programme for graduates looking to start a career in local government. We currently have two graduate trainees under the scheme. We have taken on five graduates in total over the last three years.
Lewis, one of our recent graduate employees, described the scheme:
Students experience work at the Council
In May we had 15 students from Collyer’s Sixth Form College in Horsham join our teams for a week, to experience what we have to offer as an employer.
Meet some of the students
Scott joined our Communications team and spoke to some of his peers about their time with us:
A variety of options
Ellie (pictured here in the middle), who joined the Sustainability team commented:
“I have learnt how the Council operates, about their structure and systems. There are a lot of departments with a large range of options and variety. I enjoyed working on the website, especially the Community Climate Fund. I was surprised by the flexibility of the workforce.”
How we support the community
Jude (pictured here) worked with colleagues in our Environmental Health and Licensing team. He described his week:
“My highlight was working with the Community Link team. I learnt about the different ways technologies can help vulnerable people in the District.
"I was surprised by the large variety of areas the wider Environmental Health team cover, such as licensing, food and pollution.”
Ensuring we are accessible
Elliot experienced a week with our IT team. He tested his technical skills, commenting:
“I have learnt about the design of the Council website and how to ensure that it is accessible for everyone.”
Developing skills
We asked Scott about his week, he said:
Our offer
Our teams deliver services to some 66,000 households. We provide community, health and wellbeing support, look after green spaces, leisure and arts facilities, and manage local democracy and elections. We provide expertise on areas such as environmental health, sustainability, building control and planning, and contribute to the success of local businesses as well as the charitable sector. This all means we have a huge variety of opportunities both in front-facing roles and behind the scenes.
As an employer, we are inclusive and disability friendly. We offer flexible working, an environment where you are respected and where development opportunities are prioritised.
