Edition: July 2026
When thinking about starting a project on your home one of the first questions you might ask is: do I need planning permission?
Our new‑look webpage is the perfect place to start. We have helpful tools to guide you through the process designed to answer some of the common queries you might have.
Understand what to expect with our online guide
The page includes an easy‑to‑follow online magazine packed with helpful guidance, such as:
- The different types of planning applications and when they’re needed
- Other approvals you might require alongside planning permission
- How to apply and where to get advice
- Information on green energy options
- Common mistakes to avoid.
Use the PlanX tool
If you’d like a more tailored answer, try the PlanX tool, which provides personalised guidance. After entering some basic details about your property, answering a series of simple questions PlanX will indicate whether your proposal is likely to need planning permission, or whether you might benefit from further pre‑application advice before applying. It’s a quick and user‑friendly way to sense‑check your plans.
Expert advice before you apply
If you are still unsure if you require planning permission, or if you want extra reassurance, you can use our pre–application service. This is a paid service, but it can be very helpful in avoiding costly mistakes or delays to your project. With pre‑application advice, you’ll receive:
- An indication of whether your proposal is likely to be acceptable.
- Identification of potential issues and how to address them.
- Input from specialists (such as conservation or landscape experts, where relevant).
- The information required to be submitted with your planning application.
