Cretaceous Horsham: Discovering Dinosaura

On 18 January, our 2025 exhibition will open and uncover the story of how dinosaurs came to be discovered, following the story of Sussex physician Gideon Mantell.

Mantell found a fossilised Iguanodon tooth in 1825 and made the realisation that it belonged to a giant animal, sparking a debate on the subject which would contribute to his life descending into tragedy. As well as exploring the events which led to the classification of dinosaurs, the exhibition will also focus on the dinosaurs that would have been found in the District during the early cretaceous period (145 to 100.5 million years ago) through fossils and artefacts from our own collections and loans from other museums.
