The work of our Environmental Health and Licensing team touches all aspects of daily life.
We are often behind the scenes, keeping you safe at home, in town, at work and during your leisure time. Here are just some of the areas we look after:
Housing health and safety
We carry out risk assessments to ensure homes are safe, in good repair and have adequate amenities.
Noise nuisance
We carry out investigations to assess whether noise is causing a nuisance.
Bonfires
Garden bonfires can be anti-social, polluting and damaging to health.
Taxi and private hire licences
We make sure the vehicles getting you from A to B are insured, safe and that drivers are checked.
Air quality
We monitor air quality across the District.
Health and safety at work
We offer advisory audits to help businesses meet workplace health and safety requirements.
Eating out
We carry out inspections of local food businesses as part of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and offer food safety training.
Premises and alcohol licences
Many of our high street shops, bars and restaurants sell and serve alcohol, our role as licensing authority is to ensure alcohol is sold safely.
Gambling, gaming and lotteries
We issue gambling premises licences for places such as betting shops and bingo clubs as well as licences for small society lotteries.
Events, busking, and street trading
We look after licences for temporary events, entertainers, charity collections and street trading.
Animal welfare licences
We look after lots of licences to make sure animals are properly cared for. These include licences for:
- Pet shops
- Animal boarding
- Dog breeding
- Zoos
- Animal training and exhibitions
- Horses and stables
Stray dogs
We run a lost and found dog service which handles the recovery and kennelling of stray dogs found within the District.
Caravan and campsites
For visitors and holidaymakers, we look after licences for caravan and campsites, as well as sites for residential use.
Pleasure boat licence
To make sure you are safe on the water a pleasure boat licence is needed for boats carrying passengers.
Tattooing, piercing and electrolysis licences
All businesses undertaking treatments which pierce the skin must be licenced to ensure that all procedures, equipment, and facilities are safe.
