Edition: July 2025
In response to a growing need for local support, Christina (one of our Ashington Wardens) and Chris (one of our Storrington Wardens) launched the Journey Group.

The group provides a space for parents and carers of children with Autism and Special Educational Needs (SEN) to get together, share experiences and provide mutual support. Developed with an understanding of how vital peer support can be from having autistic children in their own families, the initiative aims to serve those in the rural areas where resources can be more limited.
Lynsey, a parent attending the Journey Group commented:
"Starting the journey through the SEN system can feel overwhelming and isolating. Having a space to meet others on a similar path is so important. These groups offer understanding, connection and support – and the Wardens who run them are truly exceptional. They create a warm, welcoming environment where parents feel heard, valued and never alone.”
A network of support groups
We currently run sessions in Storrington, Ashington and Southwater which provide much-needed support and advice for families navigating similar challenges. Our Wardens events can be found online at www.horsham.gov.uk/wardensevents.
Multi-sports activities
The Wardens team hosted their first summer event in 2024, drawing over 200 attendees. This success led to the launch of weekly Free Multi- Sports for children with SEN or Autism sessions during term time, now attended by over 20 children and their families.
In collaboration with Chanctonbury Leisure Centre, the Wardens secured funds to purchase a sensory dome, enhancing the accessibility and appeal of these events.
There will be two summer Multi-Sports for children with SEN or Autism events scheduled for 1 and 15 August.
Find more information on these sessions here.
Dungeons & Dragons
For young people aged 11 and above, a bi-weekly Dungeons & Dragons group was introduced, quickly reaching capacity with a growing waiting list. A summer session is planned for 23 August.
More accessible and inclusive activities
The Council supports neuro-diverse children and those with learning disabilities at our Blue Oasis Film Club at The Capitol. For relaxed screenings visit: www.thecapitolhorsham.com/autism-friendly-screenings.
Our Sports Development team also supports a range of organisations to deliver inclusive activities. From dance to athletics, swimming, music, yoga and video production, there is a varied programme to appeal to a range of interests and abilities.
Wheels for ALL

One of our most popular activities is our Wheels for ALL group.
The group, based at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath, offers weekly cycle sessions for people with additional needs of all ages.
We have a wide range of adapted trikes and cycles and trained, experienced leaders on hand to offer help and support to get participants riding. Parents, carers and siblings can take part in the session.
